GW at Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House Complex

Garden Walk Buffalo made a restricted donation to the Martin House Complex back in 2007 to be used for the reconstruction of the clothes line poles restored in the gardens. The poles went up in October 2011! Yes, Frank Lloyd Wright designed clothes line poles too.

The poles, while simply designed, make a significant change in the garden area. The tops of the poles mimic the opening in the pergola woodwork. The poles are placed within the grid established by the buildings and their repeated use makes a design statement all its own. The poles are five feet in the ground, hand dug by garden volunteers. There are no existing photos of laundry drying on the poles and the Martins are known to have their laundry sent out.

This garden area also has a brick endwall with end caps holding shallow bowl planters that also incorporates a fountain. This end wall shields the view of the carriage house from the main house. The original garden design intended by Wright will eventually be recreated.

Garden Walk Buffalo also has other ties to the Martin House - GW committee member Ginny Williams is a Martin House Complex employee in charge of Interior Beautification (cleaning crew!) and also a tour docent. Garden Walk committee member Onda Simmons is also a tour docent. Past GW Buffalo chairperson Arlan Peters is a volunteer on the Gardens crew, and GW President Jim Charlier's daughter is on the Beautification team as well as a tour chaperone.

Garden Walk Buffalo is proud to have been able to contribute, in our own way, to the garden-oriented attractions in the Buffalo area.
